The next local body elections for Tauranga City Council are scheduled for 20 July 2024.

Tauranga our new wards

For our upcoming election, Tauranga City Council will have a new representation arrangement. The Local Government Commission determined Tauranga residents will elect nine councillors plus a mayor. Eight of our nine councillors will be from general wards, and we will have one councillor representing the Māori ward.

The eight general wards are: Mauao/Mount Maunganui, Arataki, Pāpāmoa, Welcome Bay, Matua-Otūmoetai, Bethlehem, Tauriko and Te Papa.

The Māori ward, Te Awanui, will cover the entire city.

Election signs in other Tauranga locations

  • Local government election signs can only be displayed from six weeks before election day to the day after election day i.e. not before Saturday, 8 June 2024 and must be removed by noon on Sunday,  21 July 2024.
  • Election signs on private property must comply with the City Plan rules for temporary signs (Chapter 4) – note a building consent is required if an election sign has a surface area greater than 6 square metres and/or exceeds 3 metres in height.  A resource consent is required if an election sign does not comply with the City Plan’s permitted activity rules for temporary signs.
  • Election signs can be located in the pre-approved sign locations set out below without seeking approval from Council. Only one election sign per candidate per designated area is permitted.
  • Election signs in any other public place must have Council approval.
  • The maximum size of an election sign in a public place is 1.5 square metres.
  • The same rules apply to a vehicle sign.

Bylaw 2010 New Zealand Transport Agency (Signs on State Highways) Bylaw 

Pursuant to section 61(3) of the Government Roading Powers Act 1989, the New Zealand Transport Agency hereby makes the following bylaw

“road safety billboard” means a sign containing only an easily understood message of text, and optionally graphics, specifically aimed at promoting a road safety message to road users.
“sandwich board” means a stable self-supporting portable sign not more than 900mm high by 600mm wide by 600mm deep. “sign” means any name, figure, character, outline, display, notice, placard, poster, banner of any kind, advertising device or appliance, or any other thing of a similar nature to attract attention that is on or over a State highway including being on any bridge or other structure that is over a State highway; and

14. ELECTION SIGNS

14.1 Approval must be obtained from Council for the siting of Election Signs on or in a Public Place. 

14.2 The maximum size of any Local Election Sign shall be 1.5 square metres in area.

14.3 Local Election Signs must comply with:

(a) clause 10 of this Bylaw

(b) Council’s Local Elections Policy.

14.4 General Election Signs must:

(a) comply with clause 10 of this Bylaw

(b) only be displayed between the period nine weeks before polling day and the close of the day before polling day.
